I have lived in Massachusetts for eight years, which means I’m now coming up on the third presidential election since moving here.
Here in Port City, around election time, there’s always a bit of an awkward moment during social gatherings when someone brings up the subject of politics. Eventually, everyone lets on that they’re on the same page, politically speaking, and then we move on to talk happily about murdering babies, requiring kindergarteners to recite the Gay Agenda instead of the Pledge of Allegiance, and inviting the Muslims (all of whom are terrorists) to attack us repeatedly without fear of reprisal. You know, as we liberals are wont.
So I was curious…what about those of you who live in areas that are NOT so politically homogeneous, where blood runs both red and blue? Do you avoid political discussions altogether in mixed company? Do book club meetings and playgroups degenerate into political brawls? Something in between? Discuss.

I totally avoid political discussions, because I am a wimp, not to mention a liberal in a reasonably conservative area… except at work, where people were more liberal, but you still had to watch yourself because, well, work.

I’m temporarily living in Israel, where for some reason the only friends we’ve made have been Jews for Jesus types. We’re atheists. My grandparents and parents were/are atheists, my husband’s father was Jewish and his mother is a lapsed Catholic turned Unitarian. (He was raised in Lexington, MA and his family was very liberal).
Anyway, we try to avoid politics and religion, but it comes up and gets awkward. Especially the time at a passover seder (which was all about the new testament!) when my husband, a string theorist/high energy physicist was talking about his research re: the big bang and it came out that these people believe the earth is 6,000 years old.
We used the crying baby excuse and went home soon after that.

We just don’t talk about politics to someone whose views we don’t share. I am not at this point able to be polite and not act as though I think I’m smarter than the other person. Because… I am. And I’m a flaming liberal living in a red state.

I’m a flaming liberal living in a reddish state (never votes for the Dems for president, definitely gets labeled a deep red state, but has Dem majorities in both state houses and the governorship and only one more Rep. congressperson than Dem.), but Palin just came up at our book club meeting on Thursday night and we were all on exactly the same page.
This is one of several deep-blue counties in the midst of the red, however. I wasn’t at all surprised.

Oh, goodness. Our staff lunch times at work have been…. um, INTERESTING lately. I keep telling myself I won’t take the bait and start talking, but then someone says something that just BEGS for a response… and we’re off.
Most of us are Obama supporters, but we have a couple of dyed-in-the-wool evangelical conservatives. It makes everyone’s day a little more exciting…
